Altena Castle is a Medieval hill castle in the town of Altena in western Germany. The castle was erected by the early Counts of Berg - in the early 12th century, supposedly around 1108. Eventually, the House of Berg abandoned Altena and moved their residence to Hamm. A short time later a village was founded beneath the hill, with the castle alongside the river Lenne. After the distribution of the Berg family estates in 1161, Altena became the centre of the County of Altena.
In 1912, Richard Schirrmann established the world's first youth hostel within the castle, which is still in use today (Jugendherberge Burg Altena).
Some photos we took in the castle.
